Manually cued live captions · for Mac

Live captions, cued by you, on your own equipment.

Turn your script into coloured captions for every character, then cue each line by hand, in time with the performance, on a projector, phones, LED signs and video outputs. Rent it for a week (£11.99) or 30 days (£24.99).

Software only. No computers, screens, projectors, cables or LED panels are provided. You use your own Mac and your own equipment, or the venue's.

What it does

Two apps in one download.

Prepare your captions in Script Editor, then cue them live in Subtitulos. Both open from the Subtitulos Studio launcher.

1. Script Editor

Prepare the subtitles from your script.

  • Imports scripts from TextEdit, Word or plain text
  • Recognises NAME: lines and gives every character their own colour, font, size, bold and italic
  • Numbers every line exactly as Subtitulos shows it
  • Turns page numbers and headings (Chapter, Act, Scene) into operator notes that never appear on screen
  • Splits long lines and sets a reading speed automatically
  • One-click tools: add a line before or after, break a line, split a subtitle, make a character from a line
  • Fits subtitles to an LED sign, so long lines become pages instead of scrolling

2. Subtitulos

Cue the subtitles live, everywhere at once.

  • Cue each line with the space bar, in time with the performance
  • Place and size the captions on the projector with the mouse
  • Characters keep their colours and fonts from Script Editor
  • Operator notes (page, act, scene) beside each line
  • Blank the captions with one key without losing your place
  • Every output follows the projector: same text, colours and transparency

Outputs

One click for each output.

Send the same captions to as many places as your show needs.

On the projector

The main caption window, plus extra windows for more screens or projectors.

On every phone in the room

Show a QR code and your audience reads the captions on their own phone over the venue's Wi-Fi. Nothing to install.

As a web page

A caption page for smart TVs, or a browser source in OBS and vMix.

Ready for production

Send captions as live video over NDI to vMix, OBS, TriCaster and Resolume, or over Syphon to Resolume, MadMapper, Millumin and QLab on the same Mac.

On LED signs

Pixel-exact captions for LED signs through an HDMI controller box, or HUB75 and NeoPixel panels over the network (DDP, Art-Net, sACN).

A colour for every character

Each character keeps their colour, font and style on every output, so the audience always knows who is speaking.

Questions

Good to know.

Are the captions automatic?

No, they are cued manually. You prepare the captions from your script, and an operator shows each line at the right moment by pressing the space bar. That makes it ideal for theatre, opera, dance and scripted events, where the words are known in advance and must be exact. For automatic captions of unscripted speech, see Pont live captions.

Do you provide projectors, screens or computers?

No. The rental is the software only. You use your own Mac, projector, screens and LED panels, or the venue's equipment.

Which computers does it run on?

Macs with macOS 12 Monterey or newer, with Apple Silicon (M1 to M4) or Intel processors. There is no Windows version yet.

Does the audience need an app to read captions on their phones?

No. They scan the QR code shown on screen and the captions open in their phone's web browser. Phones must be on the same Wi-Fi as your Mac.

Do I need internet during the show?

Only to activate your rental code. During the show everything runs on your Mac and your local network.

What happens when my rental ends?

The apps ask you to renew. Your scripts and subtitle files stay on your Mac and open again as soon as you rent again.

Which script files can I import?

TextEdit documents, Word files (.doc, .docx), rich text (.rtf) and plain text. Lines written as NAME: dialogue become coloured captions for each character.

The Mac says it can't open the app. What do I do?

Open System Settings › Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway next to Subtitulos Studio. The READ ME FIRST file in the download explains each step.
